Professions and AI

Healthcare

Healthcare: 9 professions. What AI does, what stays with the person and what to learn.

Charting eats a big part of a doctor's day. AI scribes already draft the visit note from the conversation in the exam room, but the diagnosis, the treatment plan and the signature stay with the physician.

Changing

Most of the medical AI tools cleared by the FDA work with images. They act as a second set of eyes and help sort the worklist, but the radiologist still writes and signs the report.

Changing

In the US, software that analyzes dental X-rays has already been cleared by the FDA as an aid to the dentist. Beyond that, AI speeds up communication with patients: treatment plans, consent forms, reminders.

Changing

Charting and patient instructions take hours of a nurse's shift. AI tools are starting to chart by voice, while care, monitoring and the bond with the patient stay with the nurse.

Changing

AI helps you find information fast and restate a package insert in plain language. Interaction checks and dispensing follow official sources and stay the pharmacist's responsibility.

Changing

AI can take over notes, scheduling and educational materials. Therapy itself, trust and crisis work stay with the licensed clinician, and in some places the law flatly bars AI from providing therapy.

Changing

AI drafts programs and plans quickly. What stays with the trainer is technique, motivation and responsibility for the client's safety.

Changing

Transcribing physicians' dictation is a shrinking profession: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects fewer jobs because of speech recognition. Medical terminology knowledge is still useful for checking notes written by AI.

Shrinking

A new role for nurses, physicians and practice administrators who are interested in technology: choose an AI service, check how it handles data, train staff and watch for mistakes.

New role

Health, law and finance: AI helps a licensed professional and does not replace one. Nothing here is personal medical, legal or financial advice.
